In December, the weather in Portugal is typically mild with temperatures ranging from 10-16°C (50-60°F). This makes it perfect for outdoor activities such as hiking and sightseeing without having to worry about extreme heat or cold.

Christmas is an important holiday in Portugal, celebrated with a variety of traditional customs and festivities throughout the month. From elaborate nativity scenes to festive markets filled with local crafts and delicacies, there's no shortage of holiday cheer.

But there's more than just Christmas celebrations to enjoy in Portugal during December. The New Year's Eve celebration in Lisbon is one of the biggest parties in Europe, drawing visitors from all over the world. So why not plan your trip now and book your stay before the end of the year rush?

With so much to see and do during this magical month, Portugal is definitely worth considering for your next travel adventure!

Weather in Portugal in December

Average Temperature and Rainfall

Portugal in December is considered to be part of the winter months, with cooler temperatures and a higher chance of rain.

The average temperature across the country during this time is around 13°C (55°F), with highs of 16°C (61°F) and lows of 9°C (48°F). The northern region tends to be slightly cooler than the south, with more rainfall as well, with Porto averaging 9 rainy days in December while the Algarve will only average 6 rainy days in December.

Possibility of Sunny Days and Mild Temperatures

Despite being a winter month, there is still a possibility of sunny days and mild weather in Portugal during December.

While it may not be quite warm enough for swimming or sunbathing on the beach (although some tourists - mostly Brits - will give it a go!), it can still be pleasant enough to enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking or sightseeing.

It's important to pack warm clothing for cooler evenings in Portugal during December. While daytime temperatures may be mild and wearing short sleeves is definitely possible most days, night-time temperatures can drop significantly, chilly nights often getting close to freezing in the north and centre of the Country. It's recommended to bring layers that can easily be added or removed depending on the temperature.

Average Maximum and Minimum Temperatures Across Portugal

Here are some average maximum and minimum temperatures across various regions in Portugal during December:

Does it snow in Portugal in December?

It does snow in Portugal, but usually only on higher ground inland - indeed we even have our very own ski resort, called Serra da Estrela, just a 3 hour drive from Lisbon (or 2hrs from Coimbra / 2.5hrs from Porto).

It snows in , on average, once every 50 years or so, and in the Algarve, it has snowed once, in 1954, so the chances of you encountering snow in coastal Portugal is pretty slim, to say the least.

What to Pack for Portugal in December

Layered clothing options for fluctuating temperatures

December is a tricky month to pack for in Portugal because the weather can be quite unpredictable. While the days are generally mild, with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 18°C, and even 23-25°C has been recorded over the last few years on occasion, the nights and early mornings will likely be chilly. Therefore, it's essential to pack layered clothing options that you can easily add or remove as needed.

Here are some examples of what you should consider packing:

  • Lightweight sweaters or cardigans

  • Long-sleeved shirts or blouses

  • Scarves and hats if you are heading to the north of the country

  • Fleece jackets or vests

  • Warm socks and leggings

Comfortable walking shoes for exploring cities and towns

Portugal is a country that begs to be explored on foot. From the winding streets of Lisbon's Alfama district to the historic town of Sintra, there are plenty of opportunities for walking tours and hikes. Therefore, it's essential to bring comfortable walking shoes that will keep your feet happy throughout your trip.

Consider packing these types of shoes:

  • Sneakers or running shoes with good arch support

  • Hiking boots if you plan on doing any serious hiking

  • Sandals with straps if you're visiting coastal areas

While December is relatively dry in Portugal, there is still a chance of rain during this time of year. It's always better to be prepared than caught off guard by an unexpected shower! Therefore, make sure you pack rain gear and waterproof footwear too.

Festive Atmosphere and Christmas Celebrations in Portugal

Traditional Portuguese Christmas Celebrations

Portugal is a country that takes its Christmas celebrations seriously. The festive season starts on December 1st with the lighting of Christmas lights in towns and cities throughout the country.

The Portuguese love to decorate their homes and towns with nativity scenes, which are known as "Presépios." These elaborate displays often include miniature figurines, animals, and even running water.

‘Consoada' Dinner on Christmas Eve

Christmas in Portugal is primarily about Christmas Eve, and one of the most important traditions in Portugal is the ‘Consoada' dinner on Christmas Eve.

This meal typically consists of bacalhau (salted codfish) served with boiled potatoes and cabbage or kale, although octopus is also common in the North of Portugal and in the Algarve.

It's followed by traditional desserts like "Bolo Rei," a sweet bread filled with nuts and dried fruits, before everyone heads out to midnight mass.

How Portuguese Celebrate Christmas Day

On December 25th, families in Portugal typically enjoy a more tranquil atmosphere.

On Christmas day itself (Dia de Natal), families gather together to exchange gifts and enjoy a big lunch. It's common to eat a meat dish like lamb, cabrito assado (roast baby goat), or even turkey. Alternatively, some may choose to have more bacalhau. The bacalhau consumed on the 25th is referred to as Roupa Velha (literally "old clothes") and consists of a mash made from all the leftover bacalhau, often accompanied by an egg.

In some regions of Portugal such as Alentejo coastline or Douro Valley region people continue celebrating until Boxing Day (Dia de Santo Estêvão). This day is celebrated by visiting friends or family members who couldn't make it for dinner on Christmas Eve.

Festive Markets, Decorations, and Music Throughout the Country

The holiday season in Portugal is also marked by festive markets selling everything from handmade crafts to local delicacies like roasted chestnuts and mulled wine. Cities like Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra, Lagos, Tavira, Algarve region offer plenty of opportunities for shopping and taking in the holiday spirit and atmosphere. You'll find streets adorned with twinkling lights, colorful decorations hanging from balconies and storefronts playing cheerful music.

If you're planning to visit Portugal during the holidays there are plenty of options for experiencing this festive time of year.

Top tips for Christmas

Shopping for Christmas Gifts In Portugal

One of my favourite things about Portugal is the lack of consumerism that overwhelms many parts of the Western World during the holiday periods. We are not bombarded with the relentless adverts and window displays that consumes much of the English-speaking world at this time of year, but the downside to this is that the selection of gifts is somewhat limited compared to back home.

If you are a big Christmas gift buyer, you may need to plan in advance and take advantage of online shopping because it isn't always easy to find great gifts in the shops, as their stock might not even alter that much during the Christmas period.

Having A Non-Portuguese Christmas Dinner

Even just a few years ago, it was tricky to find more ‘traditional' British & North American Christmas dinner foods and accessories, like mince pies, cranberry sauce, crackers, even whole turkeys, however now, especially if you are near the Algarve or Lisbon, there are British / foreign supermarkets which cater to this need pretty well.

The British supermarket in Portimao, Apolonia stores and the GB supermarket in Cascais are all the places you'll want to head to to stock up.

Eating Out For Christmas In Portugal

Eating Christmas Dinner - or at least a dinner on Christmas day - in a restaurant has become slightly more common in recent years, at least in areas heavily frequented by tourists, like the Algarve and Lisbon.

If you are visiting Portugal over Christmas and don't fancy knocking up a turkey dinner in your Airbnb oven, head for the tourist / expat areas of Albufeira, Lagos, Portimao or other resorts where there will be plenty of bars and restaurants serving up turkey.

Outside of these areas, you might have to have Indian, Chinese or hotel food, because most Portuguese restaurants will probably be closed.

Top destinations to visit in Portugal during December

Lisbon: Sightseeing and Christmas markets

Lisbon is one of the best places to visit in Portugal during December. With mild weather and fewer crowds, you can explore this beautiful city at your own pace. Take a stroll through the historic streets of Alfama or catch a tram to Belem Tower for some stunning views. Don't miss out on the Christmas markets that pop up around town, offering traditional crafts, food, and drinks.

Porto: Wine tasting and historic sites

Porto is another great destination to visit in Portugal during December. This charming city is known for its wine culture and historic sites. Take a tour of the port wine cellars or stroll along the Ribeira district by the Douro River. The city also boasts several museums, including the Museum of Contemporary Art and Serralves Museum.

Algarve: Outdoor activities and mild weather

The Algarve region offers mild weather year-round, making it an ideal destination for outdoor activities even in December, and although most of the sunbathing tourists have departed, the surfers and golfers are here.

You can hike along scenic trails or enjoy water sports such as surfing or kayaking. The region also has several golf courses if you're looking for a more leisurely activity.

Madeira: Hiking trails and surfing

Madeira offers breathtaking scenery with its lush forests, rugged coastline, and towering peaks. It's perfect for those who love hiking or want to try their hand at surfing. Don't miss out on exploring Funchal's Old Town or taking a cable car ride up to Monte Palace Tropical Garden.

Coimbra: University city and Christmas market

Coimbra is a university city located in central Portugal that comes alive during December with its festive atmosphere. Explore the historic university buildings or take a walk through Jardim Botanico da Universidade de Coimbra garden for some fresh air.

Unique Experiences in Portugal in December

Madeira Island's Famous New Year's Eve Fireworks Display

If you're looking for a unique way to ring in the new year, head to Madeira Island for its famous fireworks display. The show takes place over the harbor of Funchal and is one of the largest displays in the world. The island also has plenty of other activities to offer, such as hiking trails, botanical gardens, and traditional food markets.

Exploring Algarve Region's Beaches with Fewer Crowds

While Portugal is known for its beautiful beaches, they can get crowded during peak season. However, visiting in December means you can enjoy the stunning coastline of Algarve without jostling for space on the sand.

Being able to take photos of Dona Ana or Camilo beaches in Lagos without anybody on them is something that the tourists in August would not believe is possible.

Participating in Local Festivals Such as the Feast of St. Lucia

December is a festive month in Portugal, with many towns and cities hosting their own celebrations. One such festival is the Feast of St. Lucia on December 13th. This religious festival involves processions through town carrying candles and singing hymns.

Skiing in Serra da Estrela Mountains

Portugal might not be your first choice of ski resort, and certainly, it would be a little odd for tourists from Northern Europe or the alpine countries of France, Switzerland or Austria to head over to Portugal for a ski holiday. Nonetheless, it is possible to ski and snowboard in Portugal in the Serra da Estrela mountains in central Portugal, less than a 3-hour drive from Lisbon.

The resort is very small, with 22 runs and 4 lifts, and typically opens from mid-December until April, but it still is a great convenience if you are a skier/snowboarder and need a quick fix without the need to jump on a plane.

Exploring Sao Jorge Castle

Lisbon's iconic Sao Jorge Castle is worth visiting any time of year but exploring it during December gives you an added bonus: fewer tourists! Take a walk around its ramparts and admire panoramic views over Lisbon while enjoying some mulled wine from one of its cafes.

Traditional Portuguese Christmas Foods

Traditional Portuguese Christmas Foods

December is a month of festivities, and Portugal has its fair share of traditional foods that are a must-try during this time. The country's rich history and diverse culture have influenced the cuisine, making it unique and flavorful. Here are some of the traditional Portuguese Christmas foods to try:

  • Bacalhau (salt cod): This dish is an essential part of any Christmas meal in Portugal. There are over 365 ways to cook bacalhau, one for each day of the year. It can be boiled, grilled, or fried with potatoes and vegetables.

  • Cozido à Portuguesa: This hearty stew consists of various meats such as beef, pork, chicken, and sausages cooked with vegetables like cabbage, carrots, turnips, and potatoes.

  • Caldo Verde: A comforting soup made from kale, potatoes, onions, and sometimes garlic sausage.

  • Leitão assado (roast suckling pig): A popular dish from Bairrada region that features tender meat seasoned with garlic pepper marinade.

  • Castanhas Assadas (Roasted chestnuts): I'll let you into a secret… I hate Christmas. (Bah humbug!) Sorry, but I just love hot sun, beaches, barbecues and everything about summer. But! For me, the saving grace of this time of year is the smell of Castanhas Assadas being roasted on an open flame outside a train station, or in a busy shopping street. Fantastic.

  • Rabanadas: Similar to French toast but soaked in wine instead of egg mixture before frying.

  • Arroz Doce (sweet rice pudding): A creamy dessert made with rice cooked in milk with sugar and cinnamon. It's usually served cold or at room temperature.

  • Bolo Rei (King Cake): A sweet bread filled with nuts and candied fruits shaped into a crown-like wreath.

When it comes to drinks to pair with these dishes at Christmas dinner parties or get-togethers:

  • Port Wine: Produced exclusively in Douro Valley region is perfect for pairing with desserts like Bolo Rei and Rabanadas.

  • Ginjinha (or ‘Ginja'): This is a Portuguese sour cherry liqueur famous in Lisbon that has a very Christmassy taste.

Accommodation options in Portugal during December

Cozy guesthouses with fireplaces or heaters

Portugal weather can get chilly in December, so finding a cozy place to stay is essential. Luckily, there are plenty of guesthouses that offer fireplaces or heaters to keep you warm and comfortable during your stay. One of my favourite hotels in the world is the Salvaterra Country House in the Ribatejo just outside of Lisbon, which offers charming rooms with fireplaces and great pool and spa facilities.

Luxury hotels offering special holiday packages

If you're looking for a more luxurious experience during your stay in Portugal, there are many high-end hotels that offer special holiday packages during December. The Pestana Palace Lisboa is one such hotel, offering a "Christmas Wonderland" package that includes festive dinners, live music performances, and even a visit from Santa Claus himself. A great option in the Western Algarve is Praia do Canal, which has a wonderful spa and a fireplace lounge where you can relax after a day of exploring.

Budget-friendly hostels with festive atmospheres

For those traveling on a budget but still want to enjoy the festive atmosphere of Portugal during December, there are many hostels that offer affordable rates and fun events throughout the month. One popular hostel is Yes! Lisbon Hostel, which hosts Christmas dinners and parties for guests to enjoy together.

Mild Weather Conditions for Exploring Cities and Towns

The weather conditions in Portugal are mild during December, especially compared to most of Northern Europe or North America, making it an ideal time for exploring different cities and towns. You won't have to deal with extreme heat or cold temperatures during your trip.

The islands of Madeira and the Azores are especially pleasant and temperate at this time of year, and along with the Canary Islands in Spain are often the warmest places in Europe in December.

Unique Holiday Traditions and Festive Atmosphere Throughout the Country

December is a month filled with holiday traditions and festivities throughout Portugal. One of the most famous traditions is called "Consoada," which takes place on Christmas Eve. Families gather together for a big meal that usually includes codfish, boiled potatoes, cabbage soup, and traditional desserts like "Bolo Rei" (King Cake).

In addition to Consoada, there are many other events taking place throughout the country during December.
